Games you cherish?

Postby mibuwolf » Thu Jun 14, 2012 2:43 pm

Anybody else miss certain games?

Mario 64 was probably the best mario game I've played ever, yet Nintendo can't seem to make another one quite like it. Mario Galaxy is as close as they'll ever get I suppose.

Banjo Kazooie & Tooie just had some of the most funny dialogue and interesting music/tunes that I'll never forget. I can't forgive what Rare did to Banjo with that Xbox Banjo game.

I've got plenty of other fond memories of games, but those to me stood out the most among them all.

All of those games are PRIME. Good list. I'm kinda wondering why FF7 didn't make the cut? I know it's nowhere near 6, but for the first foray into 3 dimensions I think it was very well executed. I played it more for the story than gameplay. I mean come on, Sephiroth is probably the best villain in the entirety of gaming. Top 3 for sure.

EDIT: I'll compile my own list shortly.

Hoo-boy. Here comes the fallout.

For me it's:

1. Seiken Densetsu 3

2. Final Fantasy Tactics
3. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
4. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Dreamcast version)
5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
6. Guilty Gear X2

And in some sort of messed up way, 7. World of Warcraft. I know that game has changed SO many times, but I have some good memories of stupid antics with friends.

So all these games you guys are listing are the games that you would play even till you are 80? Was hoping for a more limited list. Obviously there are tons of games we all like, but if you think about it seriously enough, I wouldn't play "Super Mario Bros" for all eternity. There's just some games that stand out and stay refreshing no matter how old you get get.

You didn't really mention anything about playing the game through old age. You just asked people about games they cherished and mentioned a couple examples of your own that you had fond memories of.

Personally, I'd say Super Mario World and A Link to the Past are the two earliest ones that really stand out for me.

The simple answer is that I never played it as a kid. I never had a PS1, nor any friends who did, so I never played it.

Yep. That's what I assumed.

If I had to choose one. It would be Mariokart64. We played (and still) play it. It is getting harder to find good used controllers for it too. Our favorite party game by far.

I'm not choosing one because I have a few games that changed the way I looked at life and the concept of interacting with a story, as well as games that led me to making the friends i've made.

PC
Kings Quest/Police Quest
Star Trek:The Kobyashi Alternative (text adventure)
Everquest
LoTR online
Team Fortress 2/Left 4 Dead2/Portal 1 & 2
Torchlight/Torchlight II (these two especially ^_^)
Diablo II (&LOD)
Saints Row 2
PSone
Chrono trigger/Cross
Final Fantasy 7
Residen Evil
Diablo (first played it on the playstation)

The list could go on, but these games have had a pretty big impact in my life, for one reason or another. I'm glad I don't have to narrow it down to just one. I would never do that, cus all that would happen would be that i'd get bored of the game and learn to hate it. Variety is the spice of life.

I know I didn't specifically mention it, and I dont need to. I just thought you guys would post ones that were more near and dear to your hearts. I loved many games throughout my life, but there are those FEW that I dunno... stood out.

That makes sense. I did assume you had a PS1. My bad. I was a Nintendo kid myself too. I ended up playing it on PC back in the day, like '98 or '99.
Was pretty brutal, lots of CTDs. Our computer was a piece...kinda like all computers back then haha.

Hmmm... let me think...

Atic Atac, Heavy On The Magick and 3D Deathchase are all ZX Spectrum games from the early '80s that I still play regularly (although my actual ZX Spectrum is long gone and I use an emulator these days).

Similarly, I still play the arcade games King Of Dragons, Golden Axe and Salamander on my MAME Cabinet (I play lots of other arcade games on there too - but those are the three I keep returning to).

On the PC, Carmageddon and Master Of Magic are two old DOS games that I still play (using DOSBox because my modern system won't run them properly).

And I still play Diablo 2 (single player only, I've never played it online), Rise Of Nations and Heroes Of Might And Magic III

There may be newer games in my collection with the potential to become classics like those (VVVVVV is getting that way, as are Torchlight and Dungeons Of Dredmor) - but all three of those are too new for me to be able to tell whether or not they stand the test of time like the others I've mentioned.

These are all games that I've played since they originally came out rather than "retro" choices that are old but I've only recently got into.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault & Expansions (my precious!)
Age of Empires 2 & The Conquerors
AssaultCube
Tetris (1989)
Pokemon Blue/Red (1998)

Yeah... a lot of fond memories from these games. I always reinstall those PC games on a new PC or after a reformat and
I have a custom cartridge that let's me play old gameboy games on my DSi XL. So I always had and have these ready to play :-)

Needless to say, I'm sure a certain other game (TL *cough* 2) will be joining these ranks soon!

1. Morrowind. Bethesda has made other good games like it, but there was something about Morrowind that made it special for me.

2. Diablo 1. No explanation required.

3. Carmageddon tdr 2000. This game has just about everything you could wish for, including different ways to win races.

Once I get some money onto a prepaid credit card, I'm going to be cherishing the hell out of Pyroblazer, a cool four year old game with a laughable name

Old games I never get tired of are the Gameboy Zelda games (Seasons/Ages, Link's Awakening, Minish Cap etc.), though I rarely play them. They're so damn cute, I love how all the little characters look in the game. If those graphics and 2D gameplay could be mixed with Torchlight's loot/hack/slashing and theme I'd be ecstatic.

I tried SomaBringer, and it was cool all the way up to the point where I just couldn't take the JRPGness of it any more lol

There's a gameshow called 5 vs 1 - no it got nothing to do with pron!
