transferring files between computers?

Postby OrangeMint » Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:15 am

Hi, first I'd like to say that this game is great so far and very awesome, I bought this game not too long ago and it has blown me away, unlike the other fail game who's name I won't mention; can't wait for the 2nd game :)

But what I wanted to know, is there a way to load your saved file on one computer and transfer it to another? Since the game is not saved on server side, that means I have to level up a whole new character if I play on another comp and I find it a hassle really because I won't have the items if found and such.

I'm not so computer savvy, so if this is possible, I would really appreciate an explanation on how to do this. I was thinking of just trying to find the torchlight folder and just copy-paste it onto my usb and transfer to my other comp, although I'm not sure if it can work this way :s

Also, if i do this, will I be labeled as a "cheater"? Hopefully I won't :(

thank you for your time everyone.

If you have the Steam version, you can have your saves transferred automatically with the Steam Cloud feature.

If you don't have the steam version:
Go to your Application Data folder (varies on different operating systems) and from there go to "runic games\torchlight\saves\". That's where your characters (and shared stash) are kept. Copy whatever you want from there into the same folder on the other computer.

ahhh thanks a bunch! And I assume I can just transfer back and forth just as long I keep it in the right folders(?).

That's a relief, and your method is much simpler than the one I was planning to do lol.

edit* so I actually just barely tried going to the save folder and I only saw 3 things in there: shared stash, backup.tmp, and 0.SVT
I'm not sure what the 0.SVT is, should I be too concerned about it? Also would it be just safer to copy the whole save folder instead of individual files within the folder?
sorry for the noobie questions >.<

thanks.

SVT files are you character saves.

0.SVT is your first character, 1.SVT your second etc

You can use SpiderOak or DropBox to mimic the Steam Cloud-Save, too.

That's what I do to make sure I keep my D2 and TL characters across my home PC, laptop, and work PC.

0.SVT is NOT your first character!

It is your last used character. That file will be renamed to another number.SVT when you create a new character. Also, you can rename the number part of any save file, as long as you keep the SVT trailer. The characters will still show up in the Change Character listing on the title page under the name you gave them at creation, regardless of what you name the file.
