You don't know how it got there. One morning you wake up and there it is, ribs parted like the crooked teeth of a clown's twisted smile, entrails waggling to and fro with every breath. Curiously, it doesn't hurt.

If my lungs are exposed beneath my ribs yet I'm still breathing then there's obviously something supernatural going on since physics doesn't work that way.

So my first reaction is to assume that I'm hallucinating or - since in this scenario I've just woken up - dreaming or experiencing sleep paralysis. However, if one of those is the case then who knows how I would react, since I wouldn't be reacting to reality.

So assuming I'm lucid and in control of my actions, I'd have to treat the situation as if it were really happening and my reaction would probably be to try to prod things a bit to investigate what's happening and what's keeping my lungs working rather than immediately call an ambulance.
