One of the most interesting Metal/rock bands i found recently. They have great riffs combining some kind of rock (not an expert) with thrash, some jazz and peppered with lots of Japaneese quirkyness (since they're from... you know, Japan) and avant-garde.
I present to you:
Doom - Those Who Race Toward Death, from album Illegal Soul (1991)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwkYLyg ... re=related
I recommend going with whatever you can find by them in the suggested videos, since it's hard to find their music. Not to mention, word Doom is pretty generic word when it comes to metal song/band names (not as generic as Crypt though).

So, rock/alt/metal isn't really well known for its array of female vocalists and lead guitarists.

Then I came across a band called Dead Sara

and I said "damn"

Here's another one. Band that needs no introduction if you even have a passing interest in Black Metal. I love this song for an especially sombre and melancholic mood, accentuated with small acoustic fills (not to mention i love the sound of those - very soft and "pillowy" thanks to the reverb that was used there). Without further ado:
Immortal - Cryptic Winterstorms, from album Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism [1992]

I'm probably a big girl but I've always had a major soft spot for Delerium; I'm listening to this right at this moment while debugging stuff I can only assume one of my other personalities wrote (one that eats crayons).

Very soothing. It's a long track, but if you don't love it by 3 minutes or so you never will ;)

*puts hipster glasses on* You might have not heard of this band. You could consider them Retro Metal, but it's damned good one. How they used the old vibe of late eighties-early nineties is just amazing, and doesn't feel forced. It's more of an artistic choice then just going for nostalgia. So enjoy this somewhat Progressive, Death-Thrash Metal piece, from "I can't belive it's not from 1986!". Presenting:
Entrench - Portrait of a Phobia, from album Inevitable Decay [2011]

This is a cool one. A German Progressive Thrash Metal which started their career in mid eighties. They've always had an interesting approach to creating music, taking lots of inspiration from Classical Music. You might like this song a lot if you like a lot of layered melodies which create this great whole with grandiose feeling too it. Not to mention the pacing of of it is just tremendous. Ladies and Gentlemen, i present to you:
Mekong Delta - The 5th Element (Le Bateleur)/Movement 2, from album Wanderer on the Edge of Time [2010]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkyBH9qW0sA

If you liked it, enjoy this "cover" of Mussorgski's Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks, from Pictures at an Exhibition, played by Mekong Delta :)

As a musician I listen to tons of stuff from almost all genres. That said, I constantly return to the one band that blazed so many trails and have pioneered sonic experiments that 40 years on STILL influence music: The Beatles.

I am not old enough to have grown up with them and maybe that's an advantage. Their music is eclectic and draws from so many disparate influences while at the same being profoundly influential. Bands and artists that have said they are fans of The Beatles are wildly divergent as well. Some include:

Ozzy Osbourne
U2
Slipknot
Metallica
Soundgarden
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Pain
Faather
The Sex Pistols
Yo Yo Ma
Dream Theater
Tori Amos
Coldplay
Cheap Trick
Genesis
and many more

In addition, I am listening to and working through tutorials for my new Korg Kronos workstation. It's insanely powerful; the main manual alone is 1200 pages!
