"you can't bypass steam if it is a steam game."

I was/am able to do this for EQ1 on steam. Just run the EQ1 exe separate. Was also able to copy paste it all for when I 2 boxed.

The problem I have experienced with Steam is probably not Runic's fault but Steam's.

So I started Torchlight and got the C++ Runtime error. I closed down Steam, found a possible solution on this forum. Copied the proposed settings.txt and double clicked the Torchlight shortcut. Steam started some update, and now it's downloading Torchlight AGAIN or something. Steam says it's updating it.

WTF? All the data is there, in steamapps\common\torchlight, I have like 750 megs worth of Torchlight. What could it possibly be downloading now?

Just when I was starting to accept digital distribution, Steam pulls this trick on me. Yeuch. Gimme a yell when you have a boxed version out :|

This let me start playing Torchlight in Ubuntu 9.04. After I got in to the game I reset the resolution and turned on AA. Works great!

Hmm, I just bought the game on steam and when I try to run it I get:
"This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at an other time"

What should I do (as I don't think an other time will change anything)? Thanks for your help.

So I add to exit steam, delete ClientRegistry.blob and AppUpdateStats.blob and then... I could launch the game but now I can hear the music and see the "home" in the taskbar of windows 7 but can't get it fullscreen...

Had to exit steam again and then it was ok. I can play now :)

2 boxing means running two instances of the game and playing them at the same time. Can be done with a separate computer for each or running multiple instances on the same computer.

On topic:
I am having to play the game in SAFEMODE, which makes me sad because I have to then change the resolution and music options each time. Is there a way I can set the config file to the safemode settings except that I am allowed to save settings changes? I know that I can do this by changing the config file with a text editor but don't know what those settings are.

I have only one issue, the Anti-Aliasing does not stay checked when I apply...

Hey,

Just bought Torchlight on Steam on Thursday.
Had my first playsession on Friday.
Worked fine, great game btw.

On Saturday i wanted tp play again, Steam starts up, then it says "starting up Torchlight" and then i get a Windows Error stating there is a fault in Torchlight.exe.

Have searched these forums and tried all the suggestions (safemode - reinstalling - verifying cache).
All don't work.

I am running Windows XP - SP3 32 bit.
Geforce 7800 GTX with drivers 190.38.
AMD Athlon 4200+.
Memory : 1 GB
Game was running fine in first playsession - only changed the resolution.

I am really bugged now, like the game, wanted to play.
Bought the game (well thats unusual these days) and then i am getting this ...
Hope there is a solution.

Don't know if the problem is with Steam or Runic.
All my other Steam-games (Team Fortess 2) are working fine by the way.

The message from Windows is :
AppName: torchlight.exe AppVer: 0.0.66.202 ModName: ogremain.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 001cb0f9

What a dam joke, paid for the game and it will not work at all. Never did get the game code and it will not play in Steam without a C++ error that I can not fix. I understand Runic Games is small but there is not excuse for this crap. If I wanted a second job I would expect to get paid! fail!

I just wanted to say in case someone reading this is under the impression the game is a POS and wont' run with the STeam
version that that impression could be wrong.

I dont' know why people on this thread are having issues but one thing the complainers need to do that they are NOT doing is
providing useful information along with their complaint. You folks need to post details, such as basics
What operating system? 32 bit, 64 bit, GPU (Graphics card), driver version, amount of system memory, CPU (Intel, AMD and spec),
And other details . Minus that your rantings about 'sucks' are just useless drivel that help nobody, especially you.

For the record, the game (demo and now the paid version) via Steam is working fine for me. Knock on wood I guess.

ANd for the record, in a effort to help those who are having issues here are some specs:

Windows 7 64 bit (installed a few days ago) Intel core 2 duo 8500, Nvidia GTX 285, 4 gigs RAM, Abit i35-pro mobo, realtek audio.

The Steam install here was copied from another disk(my old XP pro ) to another disk and a fresh steam install applied in Win 7 so things would 'match up'.

So far I onlyi have maybe 3 hours playtime but no issues noted yet.

So, you guys with issues POST DETAILS of system. Do not just spew 'this sucks and this don't work'. That is what children do, your
not children are ya?

I don't know what u are ranting about Uzi.
If u look at my post : i did post details about my system.
Just be glad that the game is running fine for you.

But for us ?
We bought the game - expecting a product that is tested and works.
About my PC : i know that it is in good shape - that there is absolutely no illegal program on it and that i keep it up to date and in good condition by getting new drivers and cleaning the registry/defragmentating on a regular base.
This game should work and it really puzzles me that it worked in first session and when i wanted to continue the next day it didn't start anymore.
Always giving the same windows error message.
I am 100% positive that i didn't make a change to my system in the meantime.

Like i stated ; i don't know if the problem lies with Steam or Runic ; but i would like (and i think i am in title of it) this problem being solved.
The People at Runic AND Steam (where i posted the same message) should look into this.
I hope (and think) they will.
Would be nice though if they told us (by replying or something).

Hi all,

I just wanted to support Uzi in saying that this game can run fine on steam.

I use Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit and it runs fine for me. E8500, HD4870, 4Gig RAM.

I understand everyone complaining who has problems with the game but since this is a PC game it is impossible to test every system configuration. I think Runic is doing a great job with the support here and I am pretty sure that they will come up with solutions for the problems.

Great Work, keep it on.

Well just as an off poitn as people seem to be whitewashing some of the problems and basically calling complainers whiners:

Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.090803-2339)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: System manufacturer
System Model: System Product Name
BIOS: BIOS Date: 03/25/09 11:24:26 Ver: 08.00.15
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.1GHz
Memory: 6134MB RAM
Page File: 1928MB used, 10556MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found

I can not boot up the game in anything other than safemode. Once the game starts I can change settings freely. If I change the steam properties to not boot in safe mode the game simply fails to start with no specific error message (this happens both with the default safe mode settings in place or the setting I reset it to) It is extremely annoying to have to reset the settings every time I play.

I have also experienced the Brink bug (he doesn't follow then the load screen for first boss hangs), the lack of loot from DoT kill bug, I also have 3 times over the numerous hours I have logged in game already experienced odd game drops (approximately 3-4 times) the game always saves right before but it drops with no error message. I didn't post my stats initially because most of these bugs are well documented from numerous users, the recent rash of fanboyism has drawn me to. If you follow my posts I am pleased with the game but it is currently quite buggy, and any time a bug prevents you from saving a character in rpg or opening the program on a system far in excess of the minimum specs it is a major bug, and should be fixxed asap. I appreciate that the devs appear to have fixxed these I just hope the patch hits soon, as what bugs I have and continue to experience are incredibly frustrating and obviously are affecting a descent portion of the user base.

I didn't want to call anyone a whiner. It is totally ok to complain if the game has bugs or doesn't work at all on someones system, I would do the same. I just wanted to show people who read this thread that there are systems where the game runs fine. I agree that the bugs preventing the game from running on certain systems (I cannot say how many % have these problems) have to be fixed.

Quick update from me on game not starting (Steam version).
The problem is solved.

Someone on the Steamforums pointed out that there should be a folder/map which contains
a settings.txt.
Searching with normal options - nothing to be found.
Then i went to advanced options and selected systemfolders and hidden folders.
There still remained a folder - which was a hidden file - that was why i didn't find it, which contained a folder for torchlight including settings and save.
After deleting that folder and reinstalling the game ... IT WORKS !!!

Yoehoe !!!

Thanks for the help all.
Gonna play some ... (and dont make any changes to the settings lol).
