Simple guide to Torchlight (for all classes/difficulties)

Postby Arkansaw » Sat Oct 31, 2009 11:44 pm

Class:
Generic. But actually, pick Vanquisher or Alchemist (both are better than fugly Destroyer, but the real reason is that both can get Critical Strike earlier)

Stats:
Base/what is needed for gear (reason explained later)

Skills:
Get and max three passives: Critical Strike/Adventurer/Barter. Spare pts go to Armor/Block

Gear:
Buy a complete set of gear with NOLVLREQs from the Blacksmith/Gem seller (reload as many times as needed). Go for rares if possible.

Playstyle:
Typical, except that gear upgrading is done by enchanting NOLVLREQ gear until the cows come home
Simple guide to Torchlight!

Cheating Peeps: "Oh hey Runic, I'm a cheater, your game is too easy!"
Runic: "Well gee, cheat-master, we'll get right on nerfing!"
The rest of the player base: WTF!?

Step two.

Wait until next week when most of this cheese is modded away.
Arguing over a video game? That's just silly.

1. Click on monsters until there are no more monsters
2. Click on items until there are no more items
3. Move forward, repeat

I kid, I kid, but seriously though doesn't putting all your points into passives make the game pretty boring? It doesn't seem like you'd have to (or be able to) make any tactical decisions.

Passives really make the game casual (playable with one hand, of course the ALT-lock helps too). Beating the game with passives alone may sound boring, but I don't believe in unnecessary tedium just to make things more 'interesting'.

Then why even bother playing the game in the first place?

Half the fun in sandbox crawls like this one is the ability to make the game as challenging as you want.

The same reason why pple play casual games? It is challenging enough to find as many ways to abuse the game mechanics as possible...and game mechanics can and will always be abused. It's also a refreshing change from D2, in the sense that you now have legit control over the possession of some uber runeword items.

And you don't have to use those abuses, and you can make the game more challenging for it. And for some people(a lot really), that makes the game fun.

It is absolutely a waste to invest in skills like adventurer and barter. Do NOT waste your skill points in those simply because those will come eventual with time. Well, I mean the items won't decrease in price over time, but you will get more and more gold over time. Only use those skills when you are in late game and feel that you have no more skills to invest in other than those two.

you could be right....but going by the spirit of my simple guide, that would mean you have even less things to spend your points on. :) Not that you can't, but you don't really need to.

I have to agree. I thought the adventurers' bonus to experience and fame would be a great buy, until I read the details - each skill point buys you a 2% bonus. Will you really notice a 2% bonus, when levels seem to come every few minutes already?

But it does add up, in the way that you will get more points over time. The earlier you get those skills, the more you will benefit from them.

If you play HC the reason you want to get adventurer is the bonus on pot usage, it makes the healthbar fill faster and helps you survive.
