Multi-player proof of concept

Postby dengus » Wed Nov 04, 2009 4:13 pm

I know this is very much related to what drivehappy is doing, but this is not the same project. It's not even a project yet, just a proof-of-concept. People are probably going to suggest me & drivehappy should work together, and maybe we should.

Anyways, this is mostly a proof of concept to show everyone that making Torchlight multi-player is actually quite feasible, and some day we might be able to play it as such (tho ya'll seem to be pretty convinced about that already.)

Let me say first that there are plenty of problems to overcome in order to actually make Torchlight playable multi-player. Most of the obstacles are due to the fact that it was made to be a single-player game, and no thought was put into things being synced across a network. So even if a multi-player client is developed (by whoever), don't expect it this year. Or next year. Just be happy someone is working on it :).

The link below is a video of me playing in two instances of Torchlight side-by-side, the right-side is the host and the left-side is the client (not that it matters in this video.) I'm pretty much just running around. I don't think the wolf near the end liked my company (sorry for interrupting your private time by the fire >.<)

Either way, the syncing in this demo is really crap, should be apparent from how things sometimes happen slightly differently in the two screens. Especially movement is very difficult to sync in this game, but again, it's just a demo, so it'll do.

Here ya go, have a look - http://rapidshare.com/files/302548802/tl_mp_poc.avi

edit: Zeza was kind enough to upload it to youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROi_PoWQThc

That video requires special codec to view...

Can you re-post it on you-tube? (Or format it with a codec that doesn't require downloading?)

Just download DivX. You'll need it to watch any kind of .avi

Just a suggestion.

I hope you guys open a SVN or something provide these updates and such all the time so we can play and test and maybe more people learn how to code and offer help and expand the community more.

I think that a public SVN would help tremendously, as you would get input from a -lot- of people. There seems to be a pretty active community already, and a very vocal part of it wants multiplayer for Torchlight, which is a great thing.

Out of curiosity, do you guys use some kind of peer-to-peer connection, or is it a server-client model?

Since friday.

Yeah, sure, but it's not at that stage yet. What I have is just way too hacky.

I use a server-client model, everything happens on the host side, and it just tells the client(s) what's going on.
Don't get your hopes up about a dedicated server tho, that'd be *massive* amounts of work.

This is great stuff here. I thought it would take months before any kind of progress toward Co-op.

That's really impressive, you've got spells, players and pets working already! Check your PM, I'd like to collaborate on it if you'd be up for it.

Honestly, I see a lot of people saying "It's going to take for ever, might as well wait for the MMO." or "The MMO will be out way before this.". I just want to say, I don't really care.

Just like a lot of other people, I don't care about the MMO, the MMO will be a COMPLETELY different game of this A-RPG. I don't want to play the MMO, I want to play THIS game with the friends I have. Just like Diablo 2.

So I hope you people stop complaining or commenting about the MMO being out before or bla bla bla, and I hope that the people making these mods keep working on them, despite of the people being negative!

Great work Dengus, and Drivehappy also is doing a good job with his mod. You 2 have a lot of potential and if you get your strong combined, this mod will have everything to be awesome.

I think I speak in the name of everyone that see how great this will be, so keep up with the excellent work you 2!

Zeza.
