What mods you allow without being a "cheater".

Here is a place you can discuss your Torchlight hardcore characters.

What mods you allow without being a "cheater".

Postby penmi » Thu Nov 12, 2009 12:05 pm

I've always been very strict and purist about these kind of games. I'm playing only hardcore and would like to know what's the general opinion about using mods in VHHC. I'm using only potion stack mod at the moment, but in future I'd like to use increased stash size (or maybe just make mulecharacters) and maybe respec potion.

Would be nice to hear your opinion before I install any more mods! :)
1.12b, no mods, VHHC. 100% legit, 100% fun :)

Well for me the "Respec" would already classify as cheating as you are able to first pump low-level skills early on and later remove those points and pump everything in highlevel skills, this way one has it easier both at high and low levels.
- extra stashes: no cheating as it is just a bit less tedious than using mules.
- most graphical changes are fine, as long as its not giving you a distinct advantage (like map hack with enemy positions on minimap)

But anyway since its strictly a single player game, you can do whatever you want....

I consider Respec potion as cheat too.

I am purist like you. There are the mod i use:
No identify(items are always identified, identify scrolls/spells don't exist anymore)
Frost shield glow remover
Increased destroyer buff duration(increased buff durations, its a little mana cheat, I will stop using it, when an autocast mode, will be out , manage 6 or 7 buff its boring)
Epic boss maps(maps filled with bosses, very hard to survive, but increase level up speed)
Always think by yourself.

i do approve of respec mods, i honestly think there should have been a way to respec in the game, either through a rare drop or a special dungeon/portal quest.

the current store bought version does trivialize it and make it to easy in my opinion but if you put points in a skill and find out it sucks doesn't mean in my opinion that you now have to make a new character and start over or live with an unoptimized character

You can just retire your char and optimize the next one .D

now that's just not fun, If you know it all before hand. I'd like to respec my VHHC Destroyer too, though i consider it cheating too.

I perfectly understand you. If I knew some of the things i know now. I would have handled it differently. I'd have maxed Shadow armor and defencive spell mastery :)

I consider cheating all mods changing the game mechanics. This include the respec, max stack size, all identify, torchcam, epic maps, extra/infinite stash, more purchaseable maps, enemies with different weapons, increase max level, etc.
No cheating are gender mod, gem appearance, brigter map, no narrator sounds, loot border removal, no glow, small/diablo fonts, small floaty text, and skins.

enemies with different weapons

I thought that mod only changed the visuals, not actual gameplay/stats... haven't tried it yet, so can't say for certain.

Only game-mechanic-changing mod I use is the imaginary pet, coupled with some visual changes (diablo font, mad destroyer skin).

I use the enemy weapon mod and it's only visual. Seeing skeletal knights wielding a polearm and a shield is kinda intimidating...

Love it. Sounds like the Dii.net SPF here. Can't wait for Torchlight Grail status reports :) .

I would consider just about anything other then plain vanilla installs of the game (with official patches of course) cheating in some form or another.

Exactly! :D I was a member of SPF couple of years ago, playing HC with RWM/RRM. I'm only using increased potion stack mod at the moment in Torchlight. I think it doesn't make you a cheater, only saves you some time. Playing VHHC consumes so much potions

No it doesn't? Unless you're going for speed as a priority and take the extra hits to kill faster, but it's not the usual VH/HC approach.

Well, atleast in lower levels I try to rush as fast as I can because the start is pretty boring. I always pick up everything on my way, so trips to town would take longer time, having less inventory space. But I've thought about installing the game from scratch and playing pure vanilla.
