Any tutorials for noobs?

Postby Qix » Thu Nov 12, 2009 4:30 pm

Im good with a computer. But the last time I played with an editor, was DEU (Doom Editor Utility). But the tutorials in the TorchED assets download assume i have a clue about the editor.

I got 5 minutes into it and it says 'Now add a "layoutlink". Then in...'
WTF is a layoutlink and how do I add one?

After giving up and searching the forums, I finally learned how to create a layoutlink by rightclicking under the white space in the left side under 'Layout.'

Then it says "Then in the properties of the layoutlink navigate to the town.layout (layout/town/1x1SINGLE_ROOM/town.layout) and hit ok."

Wait what?
The only properties I see are on the right side of the window (while Layout Link10 is highlighted on the left). And they have nowhere (that I can tell) to navigate anything. All I see are location, position, etc.

Im on page 5 of the tutorials and I am already completely lost for the second time. Im already about to give up since these tutorials are obviously not meant for a modding noob.

Maybe I'm just retarded, but if anyone wants to create an actual step by step tutorial (and actually explain what im clicking on so I learn something), I'd love to use it.

I apologize for my tone, had a crummy day today, not in the best of moods. I still love Runic for handing out TorchED even if im too slow to figure it out. I'll try again with TorchED tomorrow when I am less unhappy, but if I'm already having this many problems with the tutorials, i feel like its not worth it.

Honestly we just haven't built up to the point we'd like to be at yet. I know how you feel, but it's gonna take some time for the others to really figure it out before we get some real good tuts. For now I'd say just play with every setting in order, or just play the game and have fun. We will get the help we need soon.

Sorry you're having problems - have you checked out the level building videos? They may help - there are 3 altogether. I'm not sure if those are the tutorials you're mentioning (I'm guessing not as there are no pages!) but just in case, you can find them by going back through the Meet the Devs posts:

Sorry, you're frustrated.

There definitely is a learning curve to doing these things. Most of this stuff was built for a bunch of people who are all sitting in the same office and can say quickly ask if there's something that isn't obvious.

with the layout link. it looks like you're almost there. A layout link is a way to open one layout inside another layout. So you could have one layout that is a candle with a particle flame saved to "mycandle.layout" then open that candle layout multiple times within a room. if You had a room with 500 candle layouts in it and you wanted to change the color of the flame, you'd only have to change the particle in the one "mycandle.layout" and they should all change in your "roomwithtoomanycandles.layout"

When you select the layout link on the left, You'll see all the properties of the layout link over on the right. Near the bottom of that list of properties there's a property called "File." if you mouse over the right side of that property, a little browse button will appear. you can then click that, browse to your "mycandle.layout" (or whatever you want) and now that "mycandle.layout" will be loaded into your current layout at the postition of the layout link.

I hope that makes sense.
If it helps, I've been smashing my face on my desk all day too.

I think a series of tutorials is an eventuality, but I don't think right yet. The editor really hasn't been out THAT long, and people are still 'flexing their muscles' and learning just what can...and cannot..be done with it.

Don't let it get you too frustrated! And don't be afraid of asking questions...eventually, either the dev's will answer, or someone will figure it out and answer it for you. This community is FULL of people who aren't just wanting to mod, but to get together with others and work on mods together.

Have faith....it might take awhile, but I have a feeling there's a LOT of cool stuff to come....tutorials the least of it.

Thanks for the tips and help guys. Ive been looking forward to the editor mainly because of how easy and powerful the scripting editor looks in those videos you mentioned. (I actually got excited when i got to the level in the game that was from those 3 videos) So I'm definitely not giving up, just frustrated (more with myself, esp for missing that 'file' tab.) because, honestly, the editor looks like more fun than the game - which is saying a lot.

Again, thanks for the help.
