Better Random Quest Rewards

This mod improves the quality of items received as random quest rewards by forcing them to be either Rare or Unique items. It does not take long in Torchlight before quests become little more than mundane tasks resulting in no benefit other than experience, fame, and a worthless item to sell for gold. This mod aims to increase the incentive and motivation to fulfill quests for the sake of gaining items of actual use to the player.

By default, the random quest reward formula offers a 75% chance to receive an enchanted weapon/armor and a 25% chance to receive an enchanted ring/necklace. These items are sometimes Rare (depending on your Magic Find), but they can never be Unique.

This mod changes the random quest reward formula to offer a 50% chance to receive a Rare weapon/armor, a 25% chance to receive a Unique weapon/armor, a 16% chance to receive a Rare ring/necklace, and an 8% chance to receive a Unique ring/necklace. Basic enchanted items will no longer be offered as random quest rewards.

Please note that this mod only affects RANDOM quest rewards. Many NPCs have an INITIAL quest reward that is meant to be a specific item every time the NPC gives its first quest. So if you notice that the first quest reward is not a Rare or Unique item, this is a normal because the initial quest rewards have been left unmodified.

I have never received anything useful as a quest reward (compared to drops).
I don't know why the devs chose to make it that way but you fixed it :mrgreen:

Do you guys think the 66% Rare, 33% Unique distribution is balanced, or would it be better if I made it 75% Rare, 25% Unique?

I'd still keep it so a ring/necklace only comes up 25% of the time, so the new values would be: 56% Rare weapon/armor, 19% Unique weapon/armor, 19% Rare ring/necklace, 6% Unique ring/necklace.

I think 66% is fair and 33 percent is pretty much on target :)!
Nice mod btw gonna give it a shot shortly.
But before I get it does it work fine with other mods?

Yes. It only modifies one file, so it will work with any mod that doesn't modify that same file (RANDOM_QUEST_REWARD.DAT).

Why not incraese the gold/xp/fame rewards as well? 89 gold for a quest on floor 20+ is pretty silly...

Guess I've never really cared about those other rewards that much. It was always the lousy item that got under my skin more than anything else. Just looking at some of the files shows that making changes to Gold, Experience, and Fame will require editing a lot of files, and then I have to test it for balance, and I'm not really up for that right now. :?

When I played Fate, many times the items that you would bring back had very good stats, which often made me choose to abandon the quest to keep the item for myself.
So far, the items I have been returning to the quest givers in Torchlight were all pretty much pure crap. Maybe it's an idea to soup-up the quest items as well...if it's at all possible.

Might be possible for some quests that are already setup to have a specific item be the quest item; but I can't figure out how it would work for someone like Gar, which appears to be somewhat randomized.

I accepted a shadow vault quest from Vasman that was supposed to give me a black fist badge of honour with +2% increased xp gain, +85 fire damage and +225 electric damage.

When i turned the quest in, he gave me a black fist badge with +2% increased xp gain, +90 fire damage and +10% poison damage(obviously inferior).

Mods used : Improved quest rewards, tier 3 ancient items(in the max level 999 mod).

Any ideas why?

Spotted a definate bug.

I turned in a quest reward, everything was fine. Then i kept talking to vasman and kept declining the quest(so that his reward item would change).

Then suddenly he tells me that i completed the quest(when i didnt take one).

His speech is also funny...

There's really no way either of those bugs could be related to this mod. They have to be previously undiscovered bugs in the quests themselves.

This mod is only one file and it just changes random crappy treasure to random decent treasure. It's incredibly simple, and doesn't affect the quests themselves.

Edit: In fact, at least one of these bugs has been mentioned elsewhere already.

Alright, I won't comment on balance issues, but I fiddled with the numbers on all of the random quests.

I basically just increased the max amounts on fame, xp and gold for quests and left the min largely untouched. This means some times you'll get crappy numbers, and sometimes they'll be great. Since there's three different numbers there, the odds of at least part of your reward being useful is pretty good.

Edit: I'll go through later and try to actually tailor the quest rewards so they get better as the game progresses. I'm just too tired to think right now. Where do five year olds get this kind of energy?

I haven't tried this mod yet (I installed and activated it just yesterday), but I hope it won't replace Vasman's Mysterious Maps with equipment. Those quest rewards were introduced by patch 1.15, as you all know.
