[Mod, Script] Unlimited Item Tiers

Hope everyone who celebrates food today had a good time! In between spending time with family and stuffing my face I was trying to brush up on my shabby scripting skills. Anyway, because tier 2 ("epic") is just normal items + 30 levels, and IIRC the tier 3 mods work the same way, I figured it would be pretty straightforward to whip up something which can generate new tiers on and on ad infinitum. I'm not sure why Runic didn't just allow for more dynamic item creation when they have a system that can scale so well, but maybe I've just been lucky enough to avoid the horrible secrets that lurk behind tier 5 equipment.

Anyway I've put up the script at RGF along with 4 sample tiers (a renamed 2 through tier 6, which is item levels level 150-180). If you outlevel that then just double click the script and when it says "Ding!" about ten seconds later it means you have 30 levels more of equipment to play with. You should probably back up any characters before using this; I have tested it a little but not extensively as it was mostly meant to be a proof-of-concept type thing. The script should be pretty easy to modify for anyone wanting to make a bajillion new tiers for their total conversion or whatever. That being said, I'll do my best to fix any problems that are bugging you as long as they're about items. If you're fiddling around with the script and run into a problem you're almost certainly better off checking Google than with me.

Did you fix item scaling? If you see screenshots, some items have next to zero difference between tier 2 and tier 3 despite around 30 levels required for it.

And how does this play with AncientMod? Will I need to uninstall it?

i think you have to edit all the affix files, not just the basic item files to scale them correctly. so it's tons of more work to do.

It might be easier to just create post-60 stat graphs, and point new, higher tiers to the new graphs...assuming TorchED lets you make graphs, that is.

It does, or you could just edit the old graphs to scale faster. I don't want to change the scaling until I've heard from more people who have characters that level, though.

You may want mention in the op that to be able to use your mod they will need the 999 level mod, or they are never going to see tiers 4+.

*EDIT* Oh, one issue I had with Ancient Items is that the tier 2 items are set to drop past levels 60 (?), so I assume you would occasionally find tier 2 items when you should be getting tier 3.

Doesn't that still mean that if you're level 100, fighting 120 mobs that the 120 sword they drop you can't use? Or am I missing something?

Yea, perhaps. I'm not sure how stat/level equip requirement tie into the actual item level.. They could use a separate graph, or not. Doesn't mean that the player wouldn't see them drop, though :-)

If we can't equip them, then yea, should be taken into consideration.

Maybe some tweak for players that don't use lvl mod? The script could set maximum req level to 100 when it's higher. Isn't it separate value to levelmin and levelmax?
OK, and what about stat curves may it be scripted to generate them to lvl 999?

I think Tier 5 is the last tier that has items equippable by anyone under level 100.. there's no simple way to view level requirements (that I can figure out) so I'm not sure about that. I'll look at changing level requirements after I deal with-

BUG: Torchlight is 'only' set up to handle a few thousand items, so if you have too many tiers your character will show up nude. Just deleting a couple tier folders from the mod should fix this. If you need them later on you can re-generate them with the script in a few seconds and delete the lower level tiers you no longer need. I think there might be a more efficient way for tiers to handle textures that could fix this but, even if it works, it'll be at least a day before I can finish and test it.

Few thousands and one tier is ~1300 items. I wonder how many tiers we may use with no bugs and some reserve for items from other mods.

If I use more than one tier of this cool mod my destroyer shows up naked. Maybe runicgames should be made aware of this, it seems to be a mod-cripling limitation of the current Torchlight build.

So the limit for new items is somewhere between 4-5 k, that's not much. Aren't Legendary and Ancient tiers just the same thing?

I had 7,000 in there (Tier 2 to 4).
I think the limit is around 10,0000

Edit:
Did further research. Was tired when I put that mod in anyways and installed it wrong.
Installed correctly:
Max Items installed by the mod 5116
Tiers 2 to 5.
With 2 to 6 installed the characters would show up naked.
The game generated every 50th belt item correctly. Generating tier 1 to 5 equipment. (standard to mark 5)(about 500 belts)
