[MOD]Gaspar the Cartographer (moved)

Postby Lathlas » Wed Nov 18, 2009 12:26 am

This is a merchant who hangs out by the shared stash and sells nothing but portal maps.

This is now a part of my Merchant Pack mod, questions and discussion should go there.

Now I have a gem seller, a spell seller, and a map seller... woo hoo! I'm running the vanilla merchants out of business. Or at least the poor trinket girl.

Have you seen my fish seller?

http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=7370

I actually use all of those merchants as well, so I edited the trinket girl to sell only trinkets and weapons. I upped the quantity of her trinkets to compensate, so she's not totally forgotten.

this works great, thanks! he even had my custom map scroll to my dungeon without me having to do anything. my only concern is that he's hiding behind that lamp post which makes him a little difficult to see the first time, but once you know he's there it's no big deal. also, is the name a reference to CT?

thanks agian

I had a little difficulty getting him to stand exactly where I wanted him too, he seems to move around a little as well, which is odd. I tried putting him right in front of the stall a few steps south of where he is now and it didn't quite work out.

The name is sort of a Chrono Trigger reference, although Chrono Trigger didn't make up the name. All three of the gurus in CT, Gaspar, Belthasar and Melchior, were named after the Three Wise Men from the bible (although the bible itself doesn't list their names). You'll see their names pop in all sorts of fantasy genres. They make pretty good wise old dude names.

Very true. But the Chrono Trigger version is the only one that hangs out by a lamppost for all eternity :P

Just out of curiosity, do you know where the names did come from (as they aren't listed in the Bible)?

Didn't think about that. Like I said, standing by the lamppost was an accident, although now it amuses me more.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Magi#Names
Traditions identify a variety of different names for the Magi. In the Western Christian church they have been commonly known since the 8th century as Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. These derive from an early 6th century Greek manuscript in Alexandria.[3] The Latin text Collectanea et Flores[4] continues the tradition of three kings and their names and gives additional details. This text is said to be from the 8th century, of Irish origin.

Caspar is also sometimes given as Gaspar or Jaspar.[5] One candidate for the origin of the name Caspar appears in the Acts of Thomas as Gondophares (AD 21 – c.AD 47), i.e., Gudapharasa (from which 'Caspar' might derive as corruption of 'Gaspar'). This Gondophares declared independence from the Arsacids to become the first Indo-Parthian king and who was allegedly visited by Thomas the Apostle. Christian legend may have chosen Gondofarr simply because he was an eastern king living in the right time period.

In contrast, the Syrian Christians name the Magi Larvandad, Gushnasaph, and Hormisdas. These names have a far greater likelihood of being originally Persian, though that does not, of course, guarantee their authenticity.

In the Eastern churches, Ethiopian Christianity, for instance, has Hor, Karsudan, and Basanater, while the Armenians have Kagpha, Badadakharida and Badadilma.[6][7] Many Chinese Christians believe that one of the magi came from China.[8] This final idea is used by Christopher Moore in his novel Lamb.

Wow, I see what you mean a bout him hiding behind the lampost.

Image

I just started a new character because I needed to use the console to test out my gem mod and he's definitely hiding back there...

The yellow circle is where he's standing on my normal character and the yellow X is where I told him to stand in TorchEd. He likes to wander apparently.

And Here I thought I was insane. It's really odd none of my other merchants move -referring here to the Mod Merchants.

Either he's fidgeting about Crono or not having his gift ready for the Solstice. heh

Re: [MOD]Gaspar the Cartographer (map merchant) v1.3 -UPDATED

Postby Jupiah » Sat Nov 28, 2009 6:16 pm

Hey Lathlas, I installed both your Map Vendor Mod and your repacked no-conflict version of the Hero Maps,Nightmare Maps,Dragon Cave mod (thanks a million for that!) and I noticed something odd. Gasper is selling a Dragon King's Left Eye! He's not supposed to sell that, is he? I mean, isn't that a fish item (it's in the items/fish/tooth folder), and like, an uber unique drop from a boss monster in the Dragon Cave mod or something?

[Edit] Also, maybe this is a conflict with another map mod or I'm just unlucky, but I can't seem to find any Aegis Tomb Maps in Gasper's inventory. Any advice?

For some reason he made those 3 quest items type map, I don't know why. They have a rarity of 0 though so it shouldn't matter. The problem is that when I made the Static_Spawn inventory, I stuck a map in there as a demo item so people would know what format to use when adding their own items. I used the line '<INTEGER>RARITY_OVERRIDE:1' so it forces items to spawn regardless of rarity. If you delete that line it should fix the problem.

I'll upload a fixed version shortly as well. Edit: Fixed

You're not unlucky, it's a bug in the Aegis Maps.

The map file for that has
'<INTEGER>MINLEVEL:6
<INTEGER>MAXLEVEL:40'

So they stop showing up at higher levels. IT should be a max of 999 or something so it will continue to spawn.

Yeah. I've got issues.

I'm not really sure why I took to modding so quickly. But it's my new favorite hobby.

And they aren't n00bish, trust me. I deal with some pretty stupid people, you actually have decent questions.
