Total Respec mod, Jan. 10 version 2.0 released

Postby Didero » Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:39 am

Torchlight Insider download (version 2.0)
Runic Games Fansite download (version 2.0)

DESCRIPTION
This mod adds nine potions to the inventory of Tarn, the merchant to the top left of the stash and Torchlight's central plaza. All of them lower stats and give back stat points.
The official Respec Potion mod is included too, to allow resetting of skills.
A fixed version of "remove_binary.bat" is included too. Don't move it to another folder, because it won't work anymore then.

The 'Lesser Stat Reset Elixir' reduces all stats by 1 and grants 4 stat points.
The 'Stat Reset Elixir' reduces all stats by 5 and grants 20 stat points.
The 'Greater Stat Reset Elixir' reduces all stats by 10 and grants 40 stat points.
The 'Stat Reset Elixir Triple Value' reduces all stats by 30 and grants 120 stat points.
The 'Stat Reset Elixir Ultimate Pack reduces all stats by 50 and grants 200 stat points.

The 'Weakening Elixir' reduces the Strength stat with 10 and grants 10 stat points.
The 'Stiffening Elixir' reduces the Dexterity stat with 10 and grants 10 stat points.
The 'Ember Vaporizing Elixir' reduces the Magic stat with 10 and grants 10 stat points.
The 'Softening Elixir' reduces the Defense stat with 10 and grants 10 stat points.

The 'Potion of Skill Respec' by Runic removes all your skill points except the one in your starter skill, and gives you the skill points back to redistribute.

INSTALLATION AND UNINSTALLATION
First, make a backup of your savegames, found in "%appdata%\runic games\torchlight\save". This mod isn't dangerous, but making backups is always a good precaution.

If you have a previous version of this mod installed, delete it first. If one of your characters has a respec potion in their inventory, remove it first, since they will be deleted when you delete this mod.

Install by placing the "Total Respec"-folder in the "%appdata%\runic games\torchlight\mods" folder. Then run "remove_binary.bat" inside the "Total Respec" folder to make the game recheck the mod files on next startup. That will cause that startup to take longer than usual, but that's only once.

Uninstall by first running "remove_binary.bat", to make sure the game notices that the mod is gone, and then delete the "Total Respec" folder.

NOTES AND TIPS
If you think the potions are too expensive, navigate to "media\units\items\potions" and open up the '.dat' files for the potions. Replace the number behind "<INTEGER>VALUE:" with a lower value. Save the files and close them. You will have to run "remove_binary.dat" found inside the "Total Respec" folder for the game to notice the change.

If your stats go into the negatives, all your equipment will be returned to your inventory. When you increase your stats back above zero, you will be able to equip your items again, provided you meet their individual requirements.
Saving with negative stats doesn't cause any errors, but I do NOT recommend doing it.

Like with all mods, remember to make a backup of your saves before installing. I've tested this mod extensively and I didn't lose any data, but you never know. It's better to be safe than sorry.

THANKS
Thanks go to:
-Runic/Tiamat for giving me the idea of respec potions, and for the skill respec potion. And for the game of course!
-CoolasaCucumber and Sunniex of the 'Easy Respec' mod for giving me an idea of how to reduce stat points. No offense, I just prefer this way of stat respeccing.
-Nanenj for showing how to add items to the general vendor (and by extension other spawnclasses) without overriding his inventory. (Explained in detail here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10208)
-TorchLeech and the other people in the Runic Forum thread for this mod, for helping to pinpoint the encoding bug.
-You, for downloading ths mod :)

CHANGELOG

Version 1.0:
  • Initial release
Version 1.1:
  • Changed the way the potions are added to the 'General Items' vendor, so it doesn't conflict with other mods.
  • Fixed a minor typo in the readme
Version 1.2:
  • Remade the mod in TorchED to fix a file encoding bug
  • Some small improvements to the readme
Version 2.0:
  • Changed the potions entirely to allow for quicker respeccing of larger amounts, without removing smaller potions or adding too many potions
  • Added potions to respec only a single stat
  • Made custom icons for all my potions
  • Lowered the cost of all my potions
  • Fixed a major typo. Apparently it's 'Elixir', not 'Elixer'
  • Updated the descriptions of the potions
  • Minor changes to the Readme
  • Tested saving with negative stats. No damage, still not recommended

Please post any bugs you encounter and any suggestions you have here.

Oh, something I forgot to mention: The general items vendor has an infinite amount of the official skill respec potion with this mod, instead of the single one in Tiamat's mod.

Well, that's very sloppy of me. Yes, I mean stat points.

Uhm, for some reason it doesn't work for me. I've got the enchanter mod and the always identified mod. Can someone help me?

The 'Always Identified' mod and this mod both edit the general items vendor, so there's probably a conflict. That's why I mentioned in the first post to delete other respec mods. Apparently only one mod can edit the shopkeepers' inventories at a time.

The best solution I can think of is to delete the 'Spawnclasses' folder inside the 'Always Identified' mod folder. This will cause the General Items shopkeeper to start selling Identify scrolls again, but doesn't interfere with the workings of the mod, and should cause him to sell respec potions.

If you don't want him to sell Identify scrolls, navigate to the 'Total Respec' mod folder, and then to 'media/Spawnclasses'. Open the 'MERCHANT_GENERAL_INVENTORY.DAT' in a text editor, and remove this part from that file (should be lines 3 to 7):
Code: Select all
[OBJECT]
<STRING>UNIT:Identify Scroll
<INTEGER>WEIGHT:-1
<INTEGER>RARITY_OVERRIDE:1
[/OBJECT]

Then save the file. If the items still don't show up, try deleting the 'mods.dat' and 'mods.dat.adm' files in the "%appdata%\runic games\torchlight\mods" folder.

I hope that helps!

You're welcome :)

By using a tip from this thread, I updated the mod to no longer conflict with other mods that change the inventory of the General Items vendor.

I tried every other Respec mod out there with no success. Wish I had tried yours first because this is the only work to work on my Steam version. Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Nevermind, I just gutted my mod folder, changed the values before starting the game and now it works fine- they all cost 3g :)

I can't get the prices to change. I've gone in and changed the "<INTERGER>VALUE:" in each .dat down from the default (like 3500-6000) to 5. I've had no problem adjusting the respec skill price, but the respec on all the stat pots all stay high.

I got 'Respec Mod' to work, but with Total Respec none of the potions are showing up in the General Items Vendor window. I've tried removing all the other mods I had downloaded, and even altering the mods.dat file to remove the other mods in there and it still won't work. Is this happening for anyone else?

ALL versions of the game will work with every mod out there.... As long as the Mod itself works.
I have the Steam version, there has yet to be a mod i cant run. I have used EVERY mod that has a respec potion in it, they all work....
Some cant run with other mods though, thats NOT steam's problem...

There is a Sticky in the Mod forums.
http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4911

if you can't get a mod working, READ the sticky.
you may also have to exit the town and come back to get the Vendors to reset.

Cool story, bro.

By the way, I never blamed Steam for anything. I merely pointed out that that's the version I have.

actually you did.
you didn't come out and say it was Steam's fault, you implied it with your post.

you first said you tried every respec mod out there with no success.
I tried every other Respec mod out there with no success.

then you stated this is the ONLY one that works with your steam version.
Wish I had tried yours first because this is the only work to work on my Steam version. Thanks a lot!

There are other reasons you couldn't get them to work. NONE of them are Steam's fault, OR the fault of the Mod not being compatible with Steam.

I got one (possibly stupid) question; if I wanted to reset my starts to recover the points I invested in dexterity I'd have to use like 4x Legendary pots, so I would gain like 160 skill points? Wouldn't that add way too much points? Like a lot more then I had invested? I'm really confused and wouldn't like to use this till I'm sure how it works. Thanks in advance.

It lowers 4 stats by 10 and gives 40 pts....thus it would steal 160 stat pts and give you 160 back to respend.

Postby zrx » Tue Dec 08, 2009 6:58 am

Hi! After spending hours trying to find solution for this i ended up asking it myself.

I cant get this mod work. My game is updated and i was using respec mod which worked fine before i found this one can also refund stats. I deleted respec mod folder from appdata/etc/torchlight/mods/ and copied total respec there. I also deleted mods.dat and mods.dat.adm just to be sure.

Now when i start the game and enter the town, there's no sign of total respec mod in general vendor. It only shows scrolls, hp and mana pots and dog/catfish. Where did i go wrong?

EDIT: IT WORKS! I have no idea what i did different this time installing as i downloaded from same place and installed just how i did last time manually and started the game. Thanks for your support anyway =)
