[TUT] Basic First Room

Postby BanalityDUFF » Mon Dec 14, 2009 12:15 pm

Grab tutorial here. Basic First Room.pdf (1.41 MB)

The tutorial covers placing pieces from the palette to create a basic floor / wall room. It also covers creation and placement of Editor Player Start.

Note this is a very verbose tutorial for a very basic set of functions.

Hope someone finds it helpful.

Looks really good. Not sure if this is the place or in a next step Tut, but should the x,z and y snap be mentioned?
If I get a chance I might do a couple of tutorials on some of the other parts of editing, not sure when I will have time.

This is a great guide, and got me a lot farther than ever before on making dungeons. I have a couple questions though:

1- How can you get your custom rooms included in randomized dungeons?
2- How do you make the editor save the dungeon layouts to the right location? Is it all manual or will the editor do it for you?

hey . . .

1 - you need to apply a 'chunk palette' which marks on the building layout where the entrance / exit's are and then build to that.

2 - you need to save them all manually (you need to set up a mod, then manually create the same folder structure as torchlight uses.

for example (i'm using wnidows xp), my files are saved to . . .

C:\Documents and Settings\MYUSERNAME\Application Data\runic games\torchlight\mods\MineBoostPak\media\layouts\mine\1X1ENTRANCE_N\1x1_Entrance_N_RD_A.layout

i had to manually create the folders from MineBoostPak onward (from memory, you create the mod folder in the editor but have to manually make the rest of the structure).

a quick way to get there is to go 'Run' from your start menu and then type: %appdata%. that will take you to your app data folder. (i've chucked a shortcut on my desktop to my mod folder for ease of use).

the torched asset pack guide thing that runic released around the time of the editor has a decent guide to showing how both of this is done.

i was going to cover both in my next guide but hope this helps for now.

In the pdf, i found some very useful info (Hotkeys FTW !!!)

But, i was doing the Ctrl+ Arrow keys, and found something that wasn't in the Pdf... Okay Ctrl + Up down, moves it vertically up or down, but, Ctrl+left/right arrow keys, changes the tile, to a variation, of the original XD, i was doing this with a Crypt floor tile, and this command changes the layout, of how the bricks where arranged in the tile (basically, a variation, as stated above) nothing else was changed, except the look of the tile, so it could add some more differences, and not the same tile throughout the dungeon, but varied tiled, kind of nice....

I believe Ctrl with the right and left keys actually rotates the tile. You are just seeing the same tile turned 90 degrees. If you want to prove it to yourself, try performing the same action on the floor tiles that are cut diagonally. In the crypt tileset its alright to do because everything still matches up relatively well, a couple others as well. I would not recommend doing this in the cave tileset because the textures will not line up properly.

I'm at work and I'm trying to view this pdf, but it comes up as not found

is anyone else having this problem ?

if not, then I'll assume this site blocked at my job for some reason.

but if those tutorials are down and anyone has a copy could you put them up on rapidshare or mediafire or some other file sharing site ?

maybe send them to webbstre so he can put them on the fansite ? http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/
thank you
I don't have a sig
