[Workaround] Stuck Characters

Changes in game you will see:
Everytime you "Pause" the game with Enter, the Console will come up too.

After:
Start the game and load up your character.
Open Console with Enter (game will be paused).
Type 'ASCEND' and press Enter.
That should pop you up a level and hopefully you should be un-stuck.
The game will make a default 'settings.txt' everytime you remove it and start the game again.
So I deleted my 'settings.txt' to test the changes again and it worked for me multiple times.

Win XP - British Keyboard - Steam download. By following the above instructions I managed to get myself unstuck all it needs is a little bit of thought. Here is how I did it. Closed the game, wait until Steam cloud has synced with your game and finished - then open up Settings and follow those instructions above. When finished and the text file is saved, make the file a read me only file. Restart Torchlight - Steam now thinks that your saved file is newer than the one it has so when it asks if you want to keep it, just say yes. Now when you hit enter it pauses the game and opens the console for you - no more looking for that elusive tilde key.

Why they don't offer a developers console as an option in the settings screen I don't know but that is how I did my work around.

The console wasn't opening at first. I exited the game and re-edited the file and then it worked. I am unstuck now...

Hi guys,

This isn't the same problem, but sort of..

I'm in the first questplace, deeper down where you help brink, level 28 or something like that. Anywhay, are battleing this "lady" Medea, and I push her through the wall to the next room, unfortunatly the doors to that room wont open untill I kill her, but I can't reach her to do damage..

Should i use the solution in this thread, with the ascend command, or is there another way.

I bought the game via Steam a couple of days ago.

Make sure you click File>Save As>settings

It should ask you if you would like to overwrite the previous save file, click yes.

Well, it worked for me, but all my personal stash has been emptied. The game did give me a prompt about saves not being the same, so I said okay. There was nothing in the instructions about what to do for that question, and now I have been robbed. Any ideas on how to get my stash back?

As people might have read in my tread (viewtopic.php?f=24&t=9971), I got stuck on a ledge with a lot of bollocks following. As I popped through a phase portal with my new Vanquisher, I ran into the exactly same spot. Screenie: http://www.tiser.be/etc/torchlight_ledge.png

So be warned: the place right above me where I'm standing on the screenshot will get you stuck. You can't access it directly, but if there's an enemy on it and you try to melee it, you'll get teleported on top of it. Thought this might be interesting info for the devs.

Holy Cats! Thanks for that fix!!!

Had my Level 63 character stuck on that ledge in the mine Phase Portal for about three days and I was going to go nuts if I had to restart after all those hours of playing and leveling up (Completed the game once, had a nice set of gear/weapons/full stash I need ed to sell off a few things from, etc.)

Followed the instructions and Bingo! It worked on the first try. I do miss the rotating feature on the pause menu, but I'll live without it.

The ONLY "problem" was I had to go all the way back down about 6 floors to get where I was before... oh well, MORE loot drops and experience for moi!

Man, I LOVE this game - even the bugs are helpful in the end!

I've found that
ascend town
usually puts me at the bottom of stairs at the entrance of the floor I'm on

If you are stuck! There is a solution-

If you have a town portal, try opening it and going through if you can -
However, if that doesn't work, I have a handy console command we can enable for you. You can 'ascend' a floor ( which will NOT mark you as a cheater ), and that should get you out.

From start->run

%appdata%

and press enter

Then browse to runic games\torchlight
there should be a settings.txt file in there

change
Console :0

to

Console :1

Now, when you load your character, hold SHIFT and press the ~ key
a console should come up -
type ASCEND and press return
that should pop you up a level and hopefully you should be un-stuck.

on swedish keyboards it is Shift Ö that u should press for the console

I have Torchlight 1.13 on my Vista 32 bit. I also have the editor and have updated it to 4.40, I can find my heros on it, but it will not save, can anyone help me????

Be careful! ASCEND WILL MAKE YOU FAIL THE CURRENT MAP DUNGEON IN SOME CASES!

I was stuck in the first level of a map dungeon. And ASCEND simply teleported me to the town.

I was in the High security dungeon. Is there a way to rollback the save files? Please tell me yes.

I appreciate all the help everyone has posted. Unfortunately, I have the same problem mentioned earlier - my stash was emptied when I ascended. I didn't type "descend," and I didn't look in the wrong cache. I only used the personal stash - not the shared one. Followed the directions exactly. Now I think I'm going to start over anyway - I had so many gems + parts of sets I was trying to collect, I feel defeated now that it's gone. I may take a few days away from the game entirely.
I really wish there was a manual save feature in this game - mutiple save files would help avoid catastrophic fails like this.
